Gold is trading near $4,250 an ounce, down roughly 3.8% for September and 2.25% on the week alone. The metal opened Monday at $4,379, then sliced through the $4,293 support that had held earlier in the week, printing a low of $4,250. This is not a single-headline selloff. Several forces are pressing on gold at once, and together they have returned the dollar and interest rates to the driver's seat.
The trigger was a blowout US data print. The S&P Global flash composite PMI rose to 58.4 against a 55.2 forecast, the fastest business activity growth in over five years, with input costs climbing at the quickest pace since October 2022. For a Fed already fighting inflation, that is exactly the wrong number. Spot gold dropped to $4,280 on the release. Gold pays no yield, so every repricing toward higher rates raises the opportunity cost of holding it.
The Fed backdrop amplifies the damage. The central bank raised rates at its September meeting for the first time in over three years and signaled one more hike this year. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin warned that inflationary shocks could take time to subside, and Boston's Susan Collins backed the hike on concerns inflation could stay above target. The dollar responded by climbing to its highest level since July 30. The Dollar Index now sits at 101.16, just beneath the 101.86 ceiling of its 17-month range. A weekly close above that line would open 104.70 and tighten the vise on gold further.
The war premium is also leaking out. Crude fell for five straight sessions, nearly 12% over that stretch, after President Trump said US officials had a "very good meeting" with Iran's delegation, and Reuters reported Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the US eases military pressure. Washington and Beijing, meanwhile, agreed to extend their trade truce ahead of today's Trump–Xi summit. Easing tensions reduce safe-haven demand, and silver took the worst of it: it fell more than twice as hard as gold, pushing the gold-silver ratio to about 66.
On the charts, the structure has been bearish since January's $5,598 all-time high: every rally since has made a lower high. The $4,358 level, support through December and April, flipped to resistance after June's breakdown. The April-to-August downtrend now sits near $4,600, and the monthly RSI, at 60 against a moving average near 79, is still unwinding from extreme territory. That is why this correction is not yet complete. The line that matters is $4,235, the September low. A daily close below it opens $4,100 and then the July floor at $4,000.
The counterweight is real, though. Chinese gold imports are at record levels this year, helped by lower prices and a firmer yuan, and central bank demand remains structural. The Strait of Hormuz is still shut, and oil snapped its losing streak after Iran's president told the UN his country will not surrender, sending Brent back to $103. Goldalyze's view is that $4,000 remains a strong floor for long-term buyers, but gold must reclaim $4,358 before any recovery is credible. Friday's University of Michigan inflation expectations are the next test. Another hot print puts $4,235 directly in the line of fire.
