Gold is genuinely flying today. Internationally, it reached $4,235.10, with some sources showing it touching $4,245 intraday — its highest level since July 7. Silver sits at $61.988, having crossed $62 during the session for the first time since July 6.
The local market is showing an interesting dynamic today. Based on today's international rate, gold's calculated value works out to Rs 441,460, but Goldalyze's local rate still sits at Rs 435,000 — a discount of Rs 6,460. This happened because the international price moved so fast that the local market hasn't fully caught up yet. Notably, just days ago the local rate was running roughly Rs 10,000 above the international-calculated value; today that's completely reversed, meaning local buyers aren't yet capturing the full benefit of this rally. Silver shows the same pattern, with the local rate running Rs 12 below interbank. USD/PKR stands at 278.06.
Now for the interesting question: why is gold flying today? Normally, war fear is what pushes gold higher — but this time it's the opposite. President Trump said Tuesday's all-day talks with Iran were "very good," raising hopes the five-month war could be nearing an end. Qatar has prepared an interim proposal, and there are reports of direct talks between Iran and Oman on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. That optimism has pulled oil prices down 5–7%. Cheaper oil means less inflation risk, and less inflation risk means a lower chance the Fed hikes rates — which is exactly why September rate-hike odds fell from 67% to 57% today. Lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold, pulling investors back in. In short: good news — the possible end of a war — is acting as good news for gold today, a reversal from months of the opposite pattern, where war news pushed oil and inflation up and gold down.
So is this temporary or does it have legs? The honest answer has two parts. In the short term, this rally is fragile — nothing has actually been signed yet, and it's built entirely on hope. Just yesterday, Iran flatly denied any talks were even happening, so if the deal falls apart or Tehran hardens its stance again, this move could reverse just as fast as it arrived. Friday's US jobs report will also be a key test. Longer term, though, some solid structural support remains in place: central banks bought a record 289 tonnes in Q2, silver is heading into its sixth straight annual supply deficit, and US government annual interest expense has crossed $1 trillion — a structural constraint on how aggressively the Fed can actually hike. These factors suggest gold's longer-term foundation stays intact even if today's spike is purely diplomacy-driven.
On the intraday technical picture, gold is trading in the $4,200–$4,250 zone, with a real Hormuz deal potentially opening the path to $4,300. A breakdown in talks could just as quickly send it back toward $4,100.
Bottom line: today's rally is real but fragile. Caution is warranted until there's an actual deal — and until Friday's jobs report is in.
