According to Goldalyze rate data, the Karachi piece closed Saturday at Rs 437,500 per tola۔ Against last Saturday's Rs 437,000, that is a gain of Rs 500 on the entire week. Lahore finished at Rs 436,500 and Peshawar at Rs 450,500, with the local average at Rs 431,500. Silver 999 closed at Rs 6,500, down Rs 100 or 1.52%. Dubai's indicative rate was Rs 444,000, against Rs 439,000 a week ago.

That last line is the week. Dubai rose Rs 5,000 and Karachi did not move at all.

The reason is that Pakistan has been settling a debt. On 1 October this publication reported the local market trading Rs 8,700 above import parity and warned the gap would eventually be paid. By 3 October it had narrowed to Rs 6,150. At roughly $4,190 an ounce and an interbank dollar near 277.20, parity now implies about Rs 435,500 against a market at Rs 437,500 — a residual premium of roughly Rs 2,000.

The practical consequence matters more than the number. For three weeks the local rate has been absorbing international losses rather than transmitting them, which is why Pakistan fell 3.08% in September while the world fell 8.5%. That cushion is now spent. From here, the local rate moves close to one-for-one with the international price in either direction — which cuts both ways, and anyone who found the last three weeks unusually gentle should understand why that is ending.

Internationally the week split cleanly in two. Monday through Wednesday gold slid to its lowest level since 5 August as the dollar reached an eighteen-month high and Treasury yields touched levels last seen in 2002. Then Thursday's thirty-year Treasury auction drew unusually strong demand, pulling the long end down and stalling the dollar's climb. Gold rose on both Thursday and Friday, finishing Friday up 1.58% near $4,197.80 within a daily range of $4,130.10 to $4,208.10. Silver gained 3.01% to $60.84. Two sessions erased three days of damage, and both metals closed the week marginally higher.

Friday also brought the University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment reading at 46.3 — worse than forecast — with inflation expectations rising. That combination of a weakening consumer and firming price expectations is the one outcome the Federal Reserve has no clean answer for. Markets currently price an 18% chance of a hike at the 28 October meeting and 82% for December.

Now the part that should not be glossed over. Last Saturday this publication stated plainly that the call would be wrong if silver closed below Rs 6,550, and that gold's Rs 436,000 would not hold long afterwards. Silver closed at Rs 6,500, breaking both its quadruple-bottom at Rs 6,650 and September's floor. Gold held anyway.

Half of that call was right and half was not, and the half that failed is the more interesting one. When the smaller, faster-moving metal breaks structure and the larger one declines to follow, the two are telling different stories and the disagreement does not last. Either gold is about to be dragged down, or silver's break was a liquidation flush in a thin market rather than a signal. Wednesday decides it.
