Three hundred and two days of 2026 are gone and sixty-three remain, and if you have spent this year holding gold or silver there is something you should hear before any analysis. What happened to you was not your mistake. What happens next is your decision. Both of those are true at the same time, and holding both at once is the hardest thing in this business.
On 29 January, Pakistani gold stood at Rs 585,000 per tola. Today it is Rs 420,000 — twenty-eight percent lower, and now beneath the Rs 422,500 floor that held through June and July. On 27 January, silver stood at Rs 18,500. Today it is Rs 5,650, almost seventy percent lower, and having lost the Rs 6,000 line its next major level is Rs 5,350. Those numbers land in the stomach before they reach the head, and that reaction is entirely normal.
Now look at the green line on the silver chart marked four hundred and sixty-nine percent. That is the journey silver made through 2025, from somewhere near Rs 3,500 all the way to Rs 18,500. Gold climbed twenty-seven percent over the same stretch. The person weeping over this fall today is measuring from a price that had itself risen nearly fivefold. This does not reduce anyone's loss by a single rupee, but it corrects the frame through which the loss is seen. The market did not collapse. It travelled back toward where it came from. Nobody makes a good decision about what comes next without understanding that difference first.
Place the two charts side by side and you will find one story written in two different hands. Each has a green line that was rising and then broke — January's uptrend in gold, the 2025 uptrend in silver. The day that support gave way, the character of the year changed. Nobody felt it at the time, because the price was still high, and a high price is a comfortable thing to look at. That is the first lesson: damage begins on the day the structure breaks, not on the day the pain arrives.
Each chart also carries a red line labelled the main downtrend — from 29 January in gold, from 27 January in silver. All year the price approached those lines repeatedly and never broke through one. In August gold reached Rs 488,000 and stopped precisely there. On 23 August silver reached Rs 7,500 and stopped precisely at its own. Those two refusals happened in the same week, and that was not a coincidence.
Inside that fact sits the most expensive psychological trap of the year. From the June low to the August high, gold rose sixteen percent and silver twenty-two percent. Sixteen and twenty-two percent are not small numbers. For two months the conversation everywhere was that the decline was over and a new advance had begun. People bought there. But a rally that cannot break the old downtrend line is not a recovery — it is the market catching its breath inside a decline. The mind reads that pause as a turn because it badly wants the pain to be finished. This is why the deepest damage is almost never done at the bottom. It is done on the false rally that follows the bottom.
Then come the lines where price stalled for weeks. Gold made Rs 422,500 on 11 June and returned to that area again and again for two months, recovering each time. Silver made Rs 6,150 on 18 July and did the same. Those levels persuaded people there was solid ground underneath. In October both gave way — Rs 422,500 in gold, and in silver Rs 6,150 and then Rs 6,000 as well. When a level defends itself for weeks and then fails, it is not merely a number that breaks. It is the confidence built on that number. And afterwards that same level becomes the heaviest obstacle on the way back up, because standing there are all the people who now want nothing more than to get out even.
So why did it happen? Not for the reason most assume. War with Iran has run since February, and conventional wisdom says war lifts gold. This year it did the opposite. The war made oil expensive, oil remains above $100, and it rose again this week after a strike on a Saudi refinery. Expensive oil pushed American inflation to 3.7%, with petrol up 34.2% across the year. Inflation hardened the US central bank. Markets began 2026 expecting three rate cuts; instead September brought the first increase in three years, and yesterday, 28 October, the Fed held at 3.75%–4.00% while markets price an eighty-two percent chance of another rise in December. The US ten-year yield touched 5.365% this year, its highest since 2002, and remains above 5% today. When government paper pays five percent with no risk, an asset that pays nothing has only hope to offer, and hope does not set prices. Add a dollar at an eighteen-month high, and the picture is complete. Gold did not lose this year to fear. It lost to arithmetic.
And silver always pays that arithmetic twice. It is half an investment metal and half an industrial one, so when the economy is doubted, both halves are sold at once. That is why gold fell twenty-eight percent and silver nearly seventy. This is not a defect in silver, it is the nature of silver — and the same nature works in reverse, because when silver turns it moves far faster than gold. Whoever bought silver was really buying speed, and speed is fast in both directions. Very few people think about that at the moment of buying.
Last week Goldalyze published a piece called The Stealth Bull, arguing that the US ten-year yield had struck a thirty-five-year ceiling and reversed, and that this removed the single largest obstacle in front of gold. Yields did ease. Gold then fell another four percent and broke below $4,000 on 23 October for the first time since July. We are not quietly moving past that. The analysis was sound in isolation, but the weighting was wrong. What drove gold that week was not rates — it was oil, and an American technology selloff that forced investors to raise cash by selling whatever sells quickest, and gold is always near the front of that queue. The job of an analyst is not to avoid being wrong. It is to say so in the same place the claim was made.
The other half of that article, however, still stands. The price fell and the large buying did not stop. Central banks have bought more than 170 tonnes of gold this year, including five consecutive months through August. China's official reserves are at a record 2,387 tonnes, and its September imports through Hong Kong rose twenty-eight percent from August to a five-month high. Global gold funds took in $30.7 billion in the third quarter, the largest on record. The thing ordinary holders are selling out of fear is the thing the world's largest institutions are accumulating at record pace. Analysts in the Reuters surveys have cut their 2026 forecasts while most still expect recovery in 2027.
Now the last point, and it is mental rather than technical. In a falling market the real loss is not capital, it is judgement. First comes denial, and the insistence that this is temporary. Then comes averaging down, again and again. Then comes the stage where every good headline is proof and every bad one is a lie. And finally comes exhaustion, where a person sells at exactly the point where selling achieves nothing. This is not a story. It happens in every decline, every time, and in 2026 it happened to thousands of people across Pakistan. If you bought at the top, you now have two honest options — give it time, or act on levels. What you must not do is act on fear, because fear is always strongest at precisely the wrong moment.
There are two arrows on the chart now, and that is the honest position. To move up, gold must first escape the falling channel and then break that same January red line where August's rally died; silver must reclaim Rs 6,000 and then Rs 6,650, while Rs 5,350 is the next significant level beneath. Until that happens, treat every rally as a pause. The downside stays open because the foundations that held for two months have broken. Three things decide the remaining sixty-three days: whether the Fed raises in December, where oil goes, and whether the Iran war ends — because if it ends, oil falls, inflation pressure lifts, and that is the single best piece of news these metals could receive.
2026 has charged gold roughly a third and silver nearly seventy percent for its lesson. But that 469% line is still printed on the silver chart, and it is there to remind you that this market does both things. The people who eventually earn the most are the ones who were learning while everyone else was only feeling.
