Gold and silver traders endured another volatile week as a fragile Iran ceasefire collapsed mid-week, reviving the same inflation-through-energy transmission mechanism that has whipsawed precious metals for months. Gold ended the week roughly flat-to-firmer near $41,35 while Pakistan's local sarafa market proved far steadier than international benchmarks, closing at Rs435,000 per tola in Karachi with silver averaging Rs6,700–6,800.
The week opened on a constructive note, with gold trading near $4,175–$4,200 following the prior week's best performance in a month, driven by weak U.S. jobs data. That changed abruptly on Wednesday when President Trump, speaking at NATO's Ankara summit, declared the June U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement finished, adding the U.S. had no further interest in negotiations. The remarks accompanied fresh American airstrikes on Iranian targets and the revocation of Iran's oil-export waiver. Iran's Revolutionary Guards responded by claiming retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, though tensions eased by evening amid reports both sides remained open to continued talks.
Oil prices surged 5–7% on the news, reigniting inflation concerns that had only recently started to fade. The CME FedWatch tool showed September rate-hike odds jump from 62% to as high as 70% within a single session, a shift that pressured non-yielding assets. Gold fell to $4,030–$4,080, its weakest level since July 2, while silver broke below the psychologically important $60 mark to trade at $58–$59 — a 3–4% single-day decline. The gold-silver ratio widened to 69.27 from 68.47, indicating silver underperformed gold on a relative basis during the flare-up.
By Friday, sentiment had stabilized. Gold opened at $4,135, its first positive open of the week, while silver steadied back near $60. The Fed's June meeting minutes, released Wednesday, showed several policymakers had pushed for a rate hike before the committee ultimately held rates steady — underscoring how split the FOMC remains on tolerating an energy-driven inflation shock.
Away from the daily headline noise, China's central bank reported its largest monthly increase in gold reserves in more than two and a half years during June — a signal that official-sector demand has remained firm through the correction even as speculative, ETF-driven positioning has whipsawed sharply. Gold remains roughly 26–30% below January's record high near $5,600, while silver sits about 50–52% below its $121.67 all-time peak reached January 29.
Pakistan's physical bullion market has decoupled meaningfully from the international rollercoaster. On July 8, the Karachi piece rate opened at Rs437,500 and eased to Rs430,000 by evening as global weakness filtered through. Lahore traded between Rs429,000 and Rs436,000, and Peshawar's premium rate held between Rs444,000 and Rs449,000.
By July 11, the market had fully stabilized: Karachi's piece rate held flat at Rs435,000 across all four daily checkpoints, Lahore ranged narrowly between Rs433,500 and Rs434,500, and Peshawar's 12.150 rate stayed pinned at Rs447,000 all day. The local average gold rate closed at Rs428,000, silver 999 averaged Rs6,700–6,800 per tola, and the Dubai reference rate tracked close behind at Rs437,000.
Measured against January's all-time highs of Rs585,000 for gold and Rs18,500 for silver, Pakistan's local gold market is down roughly 26–28%, while silver remains about 63% below its peak — a comparatively milder drawdown than the international correction, largely thanks to rupee stability cushioning the local market from the sharpest dollar-denominated swings.

The single most important catalyst is the June U.S. Consumer Price Index, due July 14, which will largely determine whether the market keeps pricing in a September hike or begins to fade it.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's congressional testimony will also draw close scrutiny, given his hawkish tone has been a recurring drag on gold in recent weeks. CME FedWatch currently prices roughly a 75% probability the Fed holds rates steady at its July meeting, but September hike odds remain elevated above 60%, keeping gold sensitive to every inflation data point.
Twenty years of historical data show July has been gold's second-strongest month on record, averaging a 1.5% gain with a 65% win rate — trailing only August. July 2020 was the strongest July ever, with gold gaining 10.7%. June, by contrast, has historically been gold's weakest month. For now, short-term geopolitical shocks continue to override this seasonal tailwind, but if the CPI print comes in soft and Iran tensions stay contained, the historical pattern argues for a firmer back half of July.
